Established in 2022, the Sharon Begley Science Reporting Award honors the legacy of esteemed science journalist Sharon Begley (1956–2021). The award recognizes mid-career journalists who exemplify excellence in science reporting, reflecting Begley's dedication, skill, and commitment to mentoring. It aims to support in-depth reporting projects that embody high standards in science journalism.
The winner receives $20,000 to support an in-depth reporting project in science journalism. The recipient’s work and contributions to science journalism are highlighted through the Council for the Advancement of Science Writing's platforms, providing additional recognition and exposure. The award also offers the opportunity to build on Sharon Begley’s legacy of excellence and dedication to mentoring in the field.
Open to experienced journalists with at least 8–10 years in the field, including significant experience in science journalism.
